Learn about the differences between a suit jacket and a blazer.
If you’re asking this question, you probably already know that a suit jacket forms part of a set of garments called a suit. This means it could come with a waistcoat (or vest) and a pair of trousers if part of a three-piece suit or just a pair of trousers if part of a two-piece suit.
A blazer, on the other hand, doesn’t come with a pair of trousers. It’s more casual and can be worn with a dress shirt and jeans, a sweater and khakis, etc. There’s no single pair of pants that you have to wear with your blazer like you do with a suit.
But beyond that, is there actually a difference between a blazer and a suit jacket?
To an extent, yes. A suit jacket typically has a slightly slimmer fit, considering its more formal nature. After all, it’s normally meant to be worn with only the dress shirt (and vest if part of a three-piece suit), whereas a blazer can be worn with more layers.
Depending on the suit, you may be able to get away with wearing a suit jacket as a blazer, but would you even want to? For the same reason you might not wear a three-piece suit without the waistcoat, or wear suit trousers without the suit jacket, a suit jacket isn’t usually worn without the accompanying pair of trousers; one garment may be worn more, ergo suffering from more wear than the other garment(s) in a suit. Besides, the suit jacket and mismatched trousers look may appear a little off depending on the suit jacket’s construction. On the other hand, you’re more likely to end up with an orphaned suit jacket if you’ve only got one pair of suit trousers as they typically suffer from more wear than suit jackets, so it might not hurt as much to wear the jacket without the trousers after all. In the end, it’s up to you – and it depends a lot on the design and construction of the suit jacket you’re trying to pass off as a blazer as well.
