The pocket square is that little piece of cloth you see in the breast pocket of people’s suits. They add a personal touch to your suit, as you can be creative with the pattern of the pocket square or how you fold it. While custom-made suits allow you to better express your individuality than off-the-rack suits do, pocket squares add that extra flare to make you stand out even more.

Pocket squares are made from fabrics such as silk, cotton, linen and wool. As you’d expect, they’re shaped like squares. These can be folded in a few different ways, which end up with slightly different appearances once tucked into the suit jacket’s breast pocket. They’re not all plain or striped either. Take this one, for example:

It’s important to note that pocket squares are sometimes mistaken for handkerchiefs, but the fundamental difference is that you never actually use your pocket square to wipe your face or hands, or blow your nose, as you would with handkerchiefs. It stays in that breast pocket. Your handkerchief can literally be anywhere, but it’s often kept in a back pocket or in an inside pocket of your suit jacket.
