If you’ve been on the hunt for a new suit, you may have seen the term ‘four piece suit thrown around. So, what exactly is one?

The term ‘four piece suit’ may actually be misleading; a three piece suit consists of three different articles of clothing, and even a five piece suit does consist of five different garments, although the garments (besides the suit jacket, trousers and waistcoat) may differ depending on where you’re buying the suit. A ‘four piece suit’, on the other hand, has often been used to describe a three-piece suit that comes with an extra pair of trousers – or one that additionally comes with a tie. Of course, certain tailors or retailers may have their own definition of a four-piece suit, but this seems to be the case most of the time.

When it comes to buying a suit, however, it’s actually worth getting the extra pair of trousers offered by your tailor. The reason for this is that trousers suffer from a lot more wear than suit jackets. Sometimes said trousers look too worn, get damaged beyond repair, or get lost, and you then end up with an orphaned suit jacket. This is the main reason why you shouldn’t wear your suit pants without the suit jacket, such as with a dress shirt. And when you actually end up with an orphaned suit jacket, you realize that it may be difficult to get suit trousers made from the same fabric as it may no longer be available.
